The rebuilding of Versailles started in 1661 under the new reign of Louis the Fourteenth. From 1668 to 1710 it was in a permanent phase of construction. Le Notre designed the gardens, le Brun was responsible for the iconography and Le Vau, then Hardouin-Mansart, for the architecture. All used their skills to the fullest and transformed it into a world-renowned palace.

Louis Le Vau baute von 1661 an das bestehende Schloss fuer Ludwig XIV aus, beschraenkte sich aber zuhachst darauf, es etwas raecher auszuschmuecken and zu verschoenern. Die prachtvollen Westfassaden (am Gartenseite hin) erstrecken sich auf mehr als 500 m Breite, von Le Vau im Jahr 1668 begonnen. Die garten, eine meisterhafte Schoepfung Andre Le Notres, enthalten Hunderte von Statuen, Wasserspiele und becken. Zwei herrliche, von Hardouin-Mansart entworfene Marmortreppen fueren sur Orangerie.
