Hinter den Maechtigen Waellen ragen Gebaude der ehemaligen Abtei empor. Auf dem hoechsten Punkt der Insel steht die Kirche, deren reicher spaetgotischer Dekor einen starken kontrast zur strengen Fassade der Merveille bildet. Ihr Glockenturm erreicht eine Hoehe von 150 m ueber dem Meer.

Dedicated to Saint Michael in 708. The Duke of Normandy became trustee in 966 and turned to the Benedictine monks for the building, which continued without interruption from the year 1000 to the 16th century. The church is pre-Romanesque; the 12th century Ambulatory led to the prevailing Gothic style in its finest form, which can be seen in the Merveille which dates from the 13th century.

Merveille de l'Occident Îlot gravitique de 900 mètres de périmètre. Le sommet de la flèche de l'eglise abbatiale est à 150 métres au-dessus du niveau de la mer. L'ensemble formé par le bourg et l'Abbaye fait du Mont Saint Michel un haut lieu touristique aux multiples attraits. Le paysage plat, tantôt scintillant sous le soleil, tantôt drapé de brumes livides, rend encore plus majestueuse la construction pyramidale au sommet de laquelle le Saint Michel de Freniet terrasse le dragon.
