3. High above the Semois River stands Bouillon Castle, the first fortress built
by the Count of Ardennes in the Middle Ages, circa 732. The castle was
left to Godfried II in the year 1000. He went on to start the First
Crusade, becoming the Chief in 1076.

Bouillon Castle's first inception was started by the Count of Ardenne in 732 A.D. Sitting high above the Semois River, it is the finest example of Medieval architecture in Belgium. Godfried the Second, Chief of the Crusaders, built the current fortress in the middle of the 12th century.
